American football in Munich began in 1975 when local enthusiasts played with US Army soldiers. The Munich Cowboys club was formed in 1979 and became a founding member of the American Football Bundesliga (later the GFL) that same year. The team made its first German Bowl appearance in 1992, losing to the Düsseldorf Panther by one point. In 1993, the Cowboys won their only national championship, defeating the Cologne Crocodiles 42–36 in a dramatic home game after trailing 7–20 at halftime. The club has experienced periods of relegation and promotion, withdrawing to the Regionalliga Süd in 2003 but returning to the GFL in 2004 and again in 2008. As of 2015, the Cowboys had played fewer GFL games than the Düsseldorf Panther and had spent fewer seasons at the highest level than that club.
