The Marburg Mercenaries entered competitive league football in 1992, playing in the tier-five Verbandsliga Hessen. They gradually worked up through the local league system, winning the tier-three Regionalliga Mitte in 1997 to earn promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. After winning their division in 2001 and 2002, they failed promotion in 2001 but succeeded in 2003 by defeating the Munich Cowboys, moving into the German Football League (GFL).

The Mercenaries struggled in their first GFL season, winning only one of twelve games and surviving relegation against the Munich Cowboys. From 2004 onward, they became a constant contender for the southern division title, winning it in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2010. Their best domestic season was 2006, when they reached the German Bowl but lost 13–31 to the Braunschweig Lions, breaking a thirteen-year drought for southern division clubs.

Internationally, the Mercenaries won the second-tier EFAF Cup in 2005. In 2007, they participated in the European Football League, reaching the Eurobowl final but losing to the Vikings Vienna. The club has since failed to reach another final but remained a strong team in the southern division, qualifying for the play-offs in most years through 2019.
