The München Rangers were formed in 1981 from the youth team of the Munich Cowboys. They entered league football in 1983 in the 2. Bundesliga, winning a division title in 1986 and promotion to the American Football-Bundesliga. During these early years, the club also reached the German Junior Bowl in 1983 and 1984, losing both games. The Rangers played in the Bundesliga from 1987 to 1991, initially in a single-division league (1987–1989) and then in the newly formed southern group (1990–1991) alongside local rival Munich Cowboys. Except for 1990, when they reached the play-offs and lost to Bad Homburg Falken in the first round, the Rangers were never a strong side. In 1991 they finished last and were relegated. The following season, back in the 2. Bundesliga, they suffered another relegation and disappeared into regional football. The club played in the Bavarian league (Bayernliga) until dropping out of league football altogether at the end of the 1997 season. After rebuilding in 1999 and 2000, they rejoined league football in 2001 in the tier five Landesliga, returned to the Bayernliga the next season, dropped to the fifth tier again in 2004, and then played in the Bayernliga until 2012.
