The Kiel Baltic Hurricanes began competitive play in 1989 in the tier-four Landesliga Nord and reached the 2nd Bundesliga Nord by 1993. After back-to-back championships in that league, they played in the 1st Bundesliga Nord from 1996, which later became the German Football League. The club reached the playoffs from 1997 to 2000, making the semi-finals once in 1999, but was relegated in 2002 after a combined 100-0 shutout loss to the Dresden Monarchs in the relegation round. Restarting in the tier-three Regionalliga Nordost, the club quickly recovered and returned to the GFL in 2007.
