The Ingolstadt Dukes are an American football club based in Ingolstadt, Bavaria. The team was founded on 8 October 2007 at the clubhouse of TV 1861 Ingolstadt, which serves as its parent organization. The Dukes’ greatest achievement came in 2016 when they earned promotion to the German Football League (GFL), the highest level of American football in Germany.
In their early years, the Dukes played in nearby Manching because they lacked a permanent home field in Ingolstadt. Their debut season in 2008 was in the eighth-tier Aufbauliga Bayern, where they finished last in their division. The following year, they went undefeated and won the Landesliga Bayern. They continued to climb, winning the Verbandsliga Bayern-Süd in 2010 and the Bayernliga in 2011. From 2012, they competed in the third-tier Regionalliga Süd, improving each season. In 2014, the Dukes went unbeaten and won the Regionalliga, then defeated the Langen Knights in a playoff to earn promotion to GFL2 for the first time. They finished second in the southern division of GFL2 in 2015. In 2016, they moved up to the GFL. In their first GFL season (2017), they placed fourth and lost in the playoff quarterfinals to the Braunschweig Lions.
The club’s logo features a stylized 'D' and a crown, representing the team name and the city's ducal heritage. The team name “Dukes” refers to the city’s history as the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt.
Honours include GFL playoff qualifications in 2017 and 2023, GFL league membership from 2017–2019 and again in 2023, GFL2 championships in 2016 and 2022, Regionalliga Süd titles in 2014 and 2021, a Bayernliga championship in 2011, a Verbandsliga Bayern-Süd title in 2010, and a Landesliga Bayern championship in 2009.
