Frankfurt Universe was founded in 2007 after the dissolution of the NFL Europa team Frankfurt Galaxy, by fans who initially hoped to use the Galaxy name but were blocked because the naming rights belonged to the National Football League. The club began play in 2008 in the tier-five Landesliga Hessen, finishing runners-up and earning promotion to the Oberliga for 2009. There it went unbeaten and moved up to the Regionalliga Mitte, where it played in 2010 and 2011, finishing runners-up in the latter year to win promotion to the national second tier, German Football League 2.

From 2012 to 2014, the Universe competed in the southern division of GFL2, finishing as runners-up behind the Allgäu Comets in 2012 and 2013, and third in 2014. In late 2014, the club purchased the rights to the Galaxy name, separated the first team, and fielded it as Frankfurt Galaxy from 2015 onward, playing at the Frankfurter Volksbank Stadion. The Galaxy team won the GFL2 south with a perfect season in 2015 and earned promotion to the GFL after the Franken Knights withdrew from the promotion/relegation round. The original Frankfurt Universe club continued to exist separately and never abandoned the Universe name.
