Synopsis
Cha Cha and Bobo, part of a traveling act called the Atwood Orangutans, are separated from their trainer Tommy Atwood after he is knocked unconscious in a car accident while traveling from Arizona to California. Frightened, both orangutans run away. Cha Cha is eventually found and sent to a government research center in Washington, D.C. Weeks later, Cha Cha escapes and ends up in a lab where he drinks an experimental mixture meant to increase human intelligence. The mixture enables him to talk, and he is later determined to have an IQ of 256. Renamed Mr. Smith, he becomes a political adviser. His former trainer Tommy becomes his assistant. Mr. Smith's staff, including secretary Raymond Holyoke, works to keep his identity hidden from the public. The premiere episode earned a 12.1/22 rating/share, ranked 47th out of 57 shows that week, and was panned by critics. Viewership declined, and the series was canceled on December 14, 1983.
