Did You Know?

Premise

The Addams family is a close-knit extended household with macabre interests and unexplained supernatural abilities. The interior is filled with bizarre collector's items, such as a mounted swordfish head with a human leg protruding from its mouth. The family is served by towering butler Lurch and Thing, a disembodied hand that appears from wooden boxes. Recurring relatives include Gomez's Cousin Itt, Morticia's sister Ophelia, and her mother Grandma Frump. Much of the humor comes from the Addamses' culture clash with outsiders; they treat visitors with warmth and courtesy despite the guests' confusion or fear. The family is puzzled by horrified reactions to their normal behavior and views conventional tastes with tolerant suspicion.

Production

Series creator David Levy described the family as full-bodied people rather than monsters, aiming to protect the spirit of Charles Addams's cartoons while emphasizing comedic strangeness. The tone was set by producer Nat Perrin, a friend of Groucho Marx and writer of Marx Brothers films, who rewrote every script and created story ideas. The series employed zany satire, screwball humor, wordplay, physical comedy, and slapstick reminiscent of Marx Brothers films. Running gags included labeling non-family members as strange, family members trading objects when colliding, and strange foods like toadstools and hemlock. The show lampooned politics, modern art, Shakespeare, the legal system, royalty, and rock n' roll. Prominently featuring Thing and Cousin Itt helped deemphasize darker cartoon themes. The series was shot at General Service Studios in Hollywood, California.

Reunions, sequels and adaptations

This served as a pilot for a 1973 animated series, for which only Coogan and Cassidy returned. A 1977 reunion TV film, Halloween with the New Addams Family, featured the original cast except Blossom Rock, who was replaced as Grandmama by Jane Rose. The film introduced new characters including Gomez's brother Pancho and two additional children. Astin reprised his role as Gomez for a 1992 animated adaptation. A 1998 film, Addams Family Reunion, aired on the Fox Family Channel, followed by the series The New Addams Family from 1998 to 2000, in which Astin appeared as Grandpapa Addams.

In other media

A successful 1991 film, The Addams Family, was released by Paramount Pictures starring Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci. Series creator David Levy filed a lawsuit against Paramount that was settled out of court. A 1993 sequel, Addams Family Values, earned greater critical success but less at the box office. A direct-to-video release, Addams Family Reunion, came out in 1998. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released animated films in 2019 and 2021. A Broadway musical adaptation premiered at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on April 8, 2010, with Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth, running for 722 performances until December 31, 2011.
