The series followed Billy Batson and his guardian Mentor, played by Les Tremayne, as they traveled the country in a 1973 Dodge Open Road motorhome, seeking injustices to resolve. The Mentor character was unique to the TV series and did not originate from the comics; his background and relationship to Billy were never explained. Neither Mary nor Freddy appeared in the series, though the three main Marvel Family members appeared together in tie-in era comics.

From 1975 to 1977, the show was half of The Shazam!/Isis Hour, paired with The Secrets of Isis. Joanna Cameron, star of Isis, appeared as Isis on three episodes of Shazam!, and John Davey appeared as Captain Marvel on three episodes of Isis. The series was one of the first Filmation productions to carry the trademark spinning executive producers' credit wheel during the opening credits.
