The series was created by Martin Roth, with Ted Post helping develop its core format. It aired on CBS as part of its weekend line-up, with only 15 half-hour episodes produced. The opening titles, narrated first by executive producer Lou Scheimer (using the pseudonym Erik Gunden) and then by Terry Lester as Jonah, explained the backstory: Earth was once fertile but fell to ruin due to pollution and waste, and in the 25th century a handful of scientists trained a young crew to search for remnants of humanity. The crew included Jonah (commander), Ruth, Samuel, and a chimpanzee named Adam, who could speak and reason abstractly. The show's premise was inspired by Noah's Ark, and characters were given names from the Hebrew Bible.

Helena Walker is an Aboriginal Australian paleontologist living in the 21st century, and her world fractures when her wife Victoria, a humanitarian aid worker who vanished in an unnamed country and was presumed dead, leaves her in profound grief. One night, after numbing her pain with pills and wine, Helena wakes to find herself stranded in a vast, unknown ocean. She barely escapes a charging megalodon before washing ashore on a strange island populated by dinosaurs. There, she befriends a wild dodo, only to discover a human hunter named Bob is pursuing the bird. Bob, who arrived in this world the same mysterious way, becomes her first teacher in the brutal art of survival. A Cast Spanning Millennia

The voice ensemble of Ark: The Animated Series is one of its most striking features, assembling major talent to inhabit characters ripped from wildly different points in human history. Madeleine Madden lends her voice to Helena Walker, the paleontologist at the story's center. Gerard Butler embodies General Gaius Marcellus Nerva, a brutal Roman despot determined to remake the world in his image, while David Tennant delivers the main antagonist, Sir Edmund Rockwell, a 19th-century scientist whose egocentric ambitions and betrayal of Meiyin Li drive much of the conflict. Michelle Yeoh portrays Meiyin Li, a 3rd-century Chinese rebel leader known as the "Beast Queen," who falls in love with Helena. Hand-Drawn Ambition and Character-First Storytelling

The creative team behind Ark: The Animated Series made deliberate choices to distinguish the show from its video game source material. Jeremy Stieglitz and Jesse Rapczak, the original creators of Ark: Survival Evolved, developed the series starting in 2019, though the pandemic delayed production. They partnered with writers Marguerite Bennett and Kendall Deacon Davis, who ensured the narrative was driven by character depth rather than pure action sequences. Bennett, in particular, was credited with making Helena feel "completely authentic" as an academically trained historian. Director and showrunner Jay Oliva oversaw a 14-episode, two-season run of thirty-minute episodes. A key aesthetic decision was the commitment to 2D hand-drawn animation, a choice Stieglitz defended on the grounds that it ages better and avoids visual confusion with the game's 3D models. Ark: The Animated Series was first revealed to the public in December 2020 during the Video Game Awards, where a trailer introduced the sprawling cast and confirmed the project's ambition. The series is an American adult animated science-fantasy that expands upon the world of the Ark: Survival Evolved video game, translating its survival-and-dinosaur premise into a narrative television format. Part one premiered on Paramount+ on March 21, 2024, while part two is scheduled for a 2026 release.
