Production
The original SuperTed, created by Mike Young, was the first British cartoon series aired on The Disney Channel in the United States in 1984. Young later moved to the United States and in 1988 created Fantastic Max, a SuperTed-sequel-type cartoon originally based on the pilot Space Baby, produced by Hanna-Barbera. Hanna-Barbera then decided to produce a new series of SuperTed. The theme song was replaced with a more American overture, and the show parodied aspects of American culture such as the Grand Ole Opry and Star Wars. The series used digital ink and paint, unlike the original. In the United Kingdom, Mike Young and the BBC re-recorded the series using the original voices of Derek Griffiths for SuperTed and Jon Pertwee for Spotty, with minor script changes. Episodes were split into two parts, creating 26 10-minute stories, and the series was not broadcast on the BBC until January 1990, with repeats in 1992 and 1993.
Characters
SuperTed, voiced by Derek Griffiths in the UK version and Danny Cooksey in the US version, is a teddy bear who rescues those in need. He was discarded in a toy factory storeroom before being brought to life by Spotty's cosmic dust and given special powers by Mother Nature. Spotty Man, voiced by Jon Pertwee in the UK version and Pat Fraley in the US version, is an alien from the Planet Spot who wears a yellow jumpsuit with green polka dots. He is SuperTed's best friend, brought SuperTed to life, and flies with him on missions. He dislikes being tied up by SuperTed, having his bag carried off by biting ants, being locked in Fort Knox by Texas Pete, being thrown into a Texas snake pit, being ice-danced by Pengy and Dr. Frost, looking good in stripes in a white tiger disguise, and having his spots stolen by Texas Pete. Slim, Hoppy, and Kitty, voiced by Danny Cooksey and Tress MacNeille, are Oklahoma children whose animals won first prize at a rodeo; they appear only in the episode Texas Is Mine. Major Billy Bob, voiced by Danny Mann, owns the Grand Ol' Opry and makes SuperTed a singing star in the episode Phantom of the Grand Ol' Opry. Billy, voiced by Robbie Lee, is a boy who needs SuperTed's help when his father Dr. Livings is kidnapped by the Polka Dot tribe in Dot's Entertainment. The Space Beavers, voiced by Jerry Houser and Charlie Adler, are two naughty beavers allied with Dr. Frost and Pengy who like to munch on trees; they eventually become friends with SuperTed and Spotty.
Home media
Between 1990 and 1991, BBC Video put out three VHS tapes, each combining two British-dubbed episodes into a 20-minute story. No DVD version has ever appeared in the UK or US. Hanna-Barbera Home Video issued The Further Adventures of SuperTed: Leave it to Space Beavers on VHS on 26 July 1990, with the episodes Knox Knox! who's There?, Phantom of the Grand Ole Opry, Leave it to Space Beavers, and Ruse of the Raja.
