A combined adaptation of two Matsumoto anime series.
Carl Macek of Harmony Gold USA created this animated science fiction series by splicing together footage from two Leiji Matsumoto shows, Captain Harlock and Queen Millennia. Its storyline diverges sharply from Matsumoto's originals. This was the second English-language treatment of the 1978 Captain Harlock series, following a 1981 attempt by ZIV International that is often mistakenly linked to this production.

Plot
The series is set in an undisclosed future, approximately 2583, after humanity has colonized distant stars but become corrupt and decadent. The Mazone, a race of sentient plants, plot to seize Earth after their own planet is destroyed. A lone scientist warns Earth at the cost of his reputation and life. Captain Harlock, blamed for the Mazone attacks, plans to stop them with aid from Princess Olivia of Millennia.
Production
Carl Macek expressed interest in dubbing Captain Harlock. Rights were obtained, and Harmony Gold allocated airtime for 65 episodes, but Captain Harlock had only 42 episodes. Harmony Gold bought another Matsumoto series, Queen Millennia, to extend the run. Macek and his team combined the two shows simultaneously rather than sequentially, altering episode timing so that clips from various original episodes appeared in single American episodes. This created a plot wildly different from both sources. Many episodes from both series were dropped, including Queen Millennia's final episodes, leaving that series in a cliffhanger. Despite the title, the two title characters never appeared together on-screen.
