Production
The show’s fictional settings of Port Canaan, Oregon, and Seattle were brought to life through filming across British Columbia in 2017. The refugee arrival beach is near Ucluelet on Vancouver Island, while the sheriff’s office and other spots were shot around Britannia Beach, north of Vancouver. Vancouver’s Oceanic Plaza stood in for the Homeland Security offices in Seattle, with additional filming in Steveston and New Westminster. Camp McLean provided the location for the first camp scenes. Production began in Vancouver in July 2017 and wrapped in late November. ABC cancelled the series after one season on May 11, 2018, though the showrunners had written the first season as a self-contained story, allowing it to reach a partial conclusion.
