Bancroft Murder Case

A Meth's murder in his own spire becomes the key to exposing the immortals' darkest secrets.

The Bancroft Murder Case is the central mystery that drives the first season of Altered Carbon. Laurens Bancroft, one of the wealthiest men alive, hires Takeshi Kovacs—a former Envoy pulled out of prison—to solve Bancroft's own murder. The case unfolds in Bay City in the year 2384, 360 years in the future, where consciousness can be transferred between bodies. Bancroft, a 300-year-old Meth, offers Kovacs a new shot at life in exchange for finding who killed him, setting off a investigation into the dark secrets of the immortal elite.

Lore & Background

The case reveals the extreme disparity between the Meths—who can live forever through clones and remote storage of their consciousness in satellites—and everyone else. Kovacs, a political operative with mercenary skills and the sole surviving soldier of the Envoys, a rebel group defeated 250 years prior, must navigate a world where stacks can be transferred to new bodies after death, but a person can still be killed if their stack is destroyed. Bancroft's murder is tied to his own wealth and power, and the investigation exposes the moral decay of a society where identity is fluid and death is merely a temporary inconvenience for the elite.

Reader's Guide

The story begins with Kovacs being released from prison by Laurens Bancroft to solve Bancroft's own murder. He works from the hotel run by AI Edgar Poe, who takes the likeness of Edgar Allan Poe. Key events include his investigation into Bancroft's digital records, his encounters with Bancroft's wife Miriam and daughter Naomi, and his confrontations with killer Mister Leung. The plot thickens as Kovacs discovers connections to his own past, including his sister Reileen Kawahara, who joined the Envoys at the same time as he did. The climax involves a dramatic showdown where Kovacs must choose between loyalty to his mission and justice for the victim. The case is resolved by the end of the first season, which consists of ten episodes and premiered on Netflix on February 2, 2018.
