Lore & Background

Kovacs was born November 23, 2100, in Newpest on Harlan's World, to Japanese and Eastern European parents. He became an Envoy, part of an elite military force trained as both intelligence operatives and shock troopers. Envoy training is a form of psychospiritual conditioning that operates at subconscious levels, granting total recall and the ability to discern subtle patterns in unrelated events. Envoys master body language and vocal tonality to manipulate others, and can control fear and anger at will.

The training systematically removes every violence-limiting instinct a human is born with. Because of this, most worlds prohibit past or present Envoys from holding political or military office. After leaving the Envoys, Kovacs became a mercenary, was imprisoned, and his stack was stored without a sleeve for decades. He was paroled or hired out for high-risk work. The fear Envoys inspire is often used by Kovacs to threaten and intimidate.

Reader's Guide

Kovacs is defined by his Envoy conditioning: total recall, pattern recognition, control of physiological and psychological responses, and the removal of violence-limiting instincts. He uses the fear his reputation inspires to intimidate. His history includes being a mercenary after leaving the Envoys, then imprisoned with his stack stored without a body for decades. He is paroled or hired out for high-risk situations. His original body is Japanese and Eastern European, born in 2100 on Harlan's World. The novels are set in or around the 26th century.
