Fictional character biography
In Aliens, Private First Class William Hudson (PFC W. L. Hudson A08/TQ1.0.41776E3) serves as a member of the United States Colonial Marines aboard the Sulaco, deployed to LV-426 to investigate a lost terraforming colony. He carries an M41A pulse rifle and demonstrates electronics skill by hacking a lock with a pocket computer and locating colonists via their locator beacons. Initially a braggart, Hudson panics after most fellow marines are killed and the dropship is destroyed, exclaiming, "That's it, man! Game over, man! Game over!" Scolded by Ripley, he regains composure and contributes to the team's defense. He is later dragged through a floor grating by Aliens and disappears; the atmosphere processor explosion leaves him presumed dead, with only Ripley, Newt, Bishop, and Corporal Hicks escaping.
Production
Bill Paxton underwent basic Marine training alongside most actors portraying the Marines, except Michael Biehn, who joined as a last-minute replacement. The actors personalized their armor; Paxton added the phrase "Contents under pressure... do not puncture" and a reference to his fiancée (later wife), Louise Newbury. Producer Gale Anne Hurd stated that James Cameron wrote the role of Hudson specifically for Paxton, and that lines like "Game over, man!" resulted from their collaboration to create a character representing the audience's voice.
Paxton claimed to have improvised many lines, including the famous "Game over, man!" He described Hudson's constant high energy as making the character one of the most difficult he played. A conversation in which Hudson responds to the Xenomorphs cutting the power with "What do you mean they cut the power? How could they cut the power, man?
Paxton was slated to return as Hudson for Neill Blomkamp's proposed sequel Alien 5, alongside Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn, but the project did not advance due to Ridley Scott's Alien prequel films. Paxton's death in 2017 makes the character's return unlikely if the project were revived.
Reception
Paxton's portrayal of Hudson was well received by audiences and critics, becoming one of his most iconic roles. After his death in 2017, co-stars gathered in remembrance on April 26, known as Alien Day. Producer Gale Anne Hurd said Paxton "made going to work fun." Actress Carrie Henn noted that Paxton often spent time with her between takes to make her comfortable. Paxton won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. The line "Game Over, Man!" has been parodied in works such as Aladdin and the King of Thieves, Family Guy, Halo: Combat Evolved, Robot Chicken, and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. In Fallout: New Vegas, a character quotes Hudson during the final mission if the player has the "Wild Wasteland" perk. In April 2026, the online horror game Dead by Daylight added Hudson as a playable character, with "Game Over, Man!" appearing as an occasional menu voice line.
