Spirogyra is a genus of filamentous charophyte green algae belonging to the family Spirogyraceae. Its common names include water silk, mermaid's tresses, and blanket weed. The genus is named for the helical or spiral arrangement of its chloroplasts, a defining characteristic. There are more than five hundred species within this genus, which are commonly found in freshwater habitats such as rivers and ponds. Individual filaments measure approximately ten to one hundred fifty micrometres in width, though they are usually no more than sixty micrometres, and can grow to several centimetres in length. Spirogyra is distributed across every continent on Earth, including Antarctica. The genus was named by the German naturalist Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link in 1820, and the lectotype species, Spirogyra porticalis, was designated in 1952 by Paul C. Silvia. Reproduction occurs both sexually and asexually. Asexual, or vegetative, reproduction involves fragmentation, where the alga undergoes intercalary cell division to lengthen new filaments. Sexual reproduction occurs in two forms. In scalariform conjugation, two or more different filaments align side by side; cells from each filament produce tubular protuberances called conjugation tubes, which fuse to form a conjugation canal. The male cytoplasm travels through this canal and fuses with the female cytoplasm, forming a zygospore. In lateral conjugation, gametes form within a single filament, with two adjoining cells near the common transverse wall producing conjugation tubes that form a canal. The male cytoplasm migrates through this canal and fuses with the female, proceeding similarly to scalariform conjugation. Spirogyra species are being researched for bioremediation, particularly for stemming toxic runoff from mines and municipal wastewater, and are also investigated as a potential biofuel. Some species, such as S. varians, are studied for potential pharmaceutical use due to their high nutrient densities.
