Full Sail University was founded as a recording studio and school in Dayton, Ohio, before relocating to Orlando, Florida, in 1980 and then to Winter Park in 1989. It expanded from recording arts into film, computer animation, game design, and other media fields. In 2012, WWE began filming WWE NXT at Full Sail, and the partnership continued until 2020 when NXT stopped taping there. The university also hosts an esports arena called The Fortress, opened in May 2019.
