Space Rogue
A blend of space combat and role-playing from Origin Systems.
Space Rogue is a space flight simulation game that blends role-playing and combat. It was created and published by Origin Systems, with later releases handled by Wave Brain and Night Dive Studios. The game first appeared in 1989 on the Apple II and Commodore 64, and was subsequently ported to MS-DOS, Classic Mac OS, Amiga, and Atari ST. Japanese versions were also made for the PC-98, X68000, and FM Towns; the FM Towns edition featured an updated intro with animations, new illustrations, scrolling Japanese text, and exclusive CD-quality background music. The story is set in the Far Arm of the Milky Way, where the player character pursues a career and long-term goals beyond an immediate mission.
The game combines a top-down role-playing style, similar to the Ultima series, with a 3D space combat simulator reminiscent of Elite. Players can visit starships, space stations, outposts, and planets, and travel between solar systems using ancient Malir Gates—wormholes that require a successful ring-traveling minigame to reach the intended system; failure aborts the jump. The 3D flight section offers first-person, third-person, and cinematic viewpoints. An arcade minigame called "Hive!" appears in bars, a 2D top-down shooter where the player fights Manchis on foot. Completing five levels earns money usable in the main game. The arcade ship resembles the Sunracer class vessel from the manual.
The plot begins with the player as a crew member aboard the Princess Blue. The captain sends them to investigate a derelict Sunracer-class ship, the Jolly Roger. While aboard, Manchis aliens attack and destroy the Princess Blue with Vulture-class ships. Stranded with only the Jolly Roger, little money, and no connections, the player can choose to become a pirate, bounty hunter, merchant, or get involved in interplanetary politics.
Space Rogue is notable as a game Paul Neurath designed for Origin after previously working on 'Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny' and 'Times of Lore'; he later founded Blue Sky Productions, renamed Looking Glass Studios. It is seen as a spiritual predecessor to Origin's Wing Commander series. A press release called it "the first of its kind in science-fiction/3D space flight simulation" and an "ORIGIN Cinematic Experience," suggesting it was intended as a series (dubbed "Ultima in Space") before Origin shifted focus to Wing Commander.

Lore & Background
The game takes place in the Far Arm of the Milky Way galaxy. The player begins as a crew member aboard the Princess Blue, sent to investigate a derelict Sunracer class ship called the Jolly Roger. While on board, alien Manchis attack and destroy the Princess Blue, leaving the player with only the Jolly Roger, little money, and no ties. From there, the player can choose a path: piracy, bounty hunting, interstellar trade, or involvement in interplanetary politics.
Reader's Guide
Space Rogue is significant as an early hybrid of role-playing and space flight simulation, predating later titles like X Rebirth and Elite Dangerous. It was the first game designed for Origin by Paul Neurath, who went on to found Looking Glass Studios. The game was originally intended as the start of its own series, sometimes called 'Ultima in Space', but Origin shifted focus to the Wing Commander series instead. In 2016, Night Dive Studios reacquired the rights and re-released the game. Reception was mixed: some critics praised its blend of genres and crisp graphics, while others, such as Mike Siggins in Games International, dismissed it as a near copy of Elite. The FM Towns version featured exclusive CD-quality music and animated intro. The game also includes a playable arcade minigame called 'Hive!'.
