Lore & Background
Set sometime after World War I in the UK, the unnamed Painter returns home to create his magnum opus. His past unfolds through exploration: a promising artist whose wife, a pianist, served as his muse. A department store fire left her severely injured, impairing her ability to play and altering her appearance, triggering the Painter's mental decline and rejections from galleries. Mutual resentment grew; the wife destroyed his portrait of her, and the Painter isolated himself. She took her own life, and he lost custody of their daughter. In the present, the Painter gathers macabre components for his final work—implied to be body parts from his wife: her skin as canvas, blood as paint, bone as undercoat, a brush from her hair, her finger for final touches, and her eye to bear witness. Three endings are possible: the Loop ending (repeating the cycle), the Art ending (a self-portrait displayed in a museum), and the Family ending (the Painter perishes in a fire).
Reader's Guide
Layers of Fear is significant as a psychological horror game that prioritizes atmosphere and narrative over combat. Its shifting environments and environmental puzzles create a sense of unease, though reception was mixed: some critics praised its storytelling and immersive scares, while others found it lacking tension and criticized its telegraphed jump scares. The game's plot parallels Anthony M. Rud's short story 'A Square of Blank Canvas' from 1924. The Inheritance DLC, released in August 2016, follows the Painter's daughter returning to her childhood home, with three endings exploring themes of trauma and generational cycles. A definitive Nintendo Switch port, Layers of Fear: Legacy, added Joy-Con, touchscreen, and HD Rumble support in February 2018. A sequel, Layers of Fear 2, was announced in October 2018 and released in May 2019. A remake combining both games launched in June 2023 using Unreal Engine 5.
