Lore & Background
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was developed after the conclusion of the Tomb Raider: Legend trilogy. Brand director Karl Stewart stated that the studio experimented to decide how to move forward, and the game was intended to start a new series simply titled 'Lara Croft'. It uses the same game engine as Tomb Raider: Underworld, featuring real-time lighting, realistic shadows, and physics-based objects. Vegetation sways in the wind and reacts to the player. The game's producer, Forest Large, noted that New Orleans was considered as a location but Mexico was chosen due to time constraints, with elements borrowed from previous games.
The game is played from a fixed isometric perspective, similar to Tomb Raider: The Prophecy. It is a non-linear, arcade-inspired action game with no loading screens once a level starts. In single-player, only Lara is playable; Totec does not assist. Creative director Daniel Neuberger explained this was to avoid player frustration from relying on AI. The single-player campaign features eight to ten hours of gameplay. Multiplayer, a first for the series, emphasizes teamwork, with unique interactions between Lara and Totec, such as Lara using Totec's shield as a platform and Totec tightrope walking on Lara's grappling rope. The multiplayer mode reportedly offers six to eight hours of gameplay depending on teamwork.

It marked a departure from the main Tomb Raider series by adopting an isometric perspective and a strong focus on cooperative play, a first for the franchise. The game received extended support with five downloadable content packs released from October through December 2010, including new maps and puzzles. A sequel, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, was released in 2014. The game and its successor were later bundled as The Lara Croft Collection for Nintendo Switch, released by Feral Interactive on 29 June 2023. The Xbox 360 version was made backwards compatible with the Xbox One in 2018 and later playable on Xbox Series X and Series S through the same method.
