Lore & Background
The game takes place in an alternate timeline where the North American colonies remained part of the British Empire, forming the nation of Vespuccia. Its Industrial Revolution produced advanced steam-tech, including automated machines and airships. The story unfolds in New Bretagne, a city blending Victorian elements of New Orleans, New York, and London, divided into several districts and facing unrest over the spread of steam-tech. In 1844, detectives Miles Fordham and Bill Leger investigate break-ins at a flower shop; a rooftop pursuit leads to Bill's death. Guilt-ridden, Miles becomes a private investigator but begins hearing Bill's voice, urging him to find the burglar. He takes sleeping medicine to cope, straining his marriage to Adelaide. Constance Upton, a police assistant and friend, provides cases: an attempted murder, an infant kidnapping, a suspicious burning death, and an election-night murder. Miles eventually stops his medicine and turns to drinking, causing his wife to force him out; he stays with Upton. After solving most cases, Upton reveals a serial killer called 'The Justice Killer' has murdered a parliament member. Miles discovers all victims received an Easter lily—the same flower stolen by the burglar who caused Bill's death. Investigating, he learns the killer, Samuel Collins, targeted men who harmed women, avenging his aunt's death. Miles confronts Samuel, who is killed by Police Chief Snelling. The game's ending varies based on player choices: if the wrong person is arrested in each case, Samuel pursues Miles but is killed by Upton; if Miles exposes Upton or arrests the wrong lead, he is imprisoned; if most cases are unsolvable, he commits himself to an asylum.
Reader's Guide
Lamplight City's significance lies in its integration of player choice into the classic point-and-click formula. Each case offers branching paths where decisions affect not only the immediate outcome but the overall ending, encouraging replayability. The game's inventory system, inspired by Blade Runner (1997), stores clues and objects in a casebook rather than a traditional inventory, streamlining puzzle-solving. Its setting—an alternate-history Vespuccia with steampunk technology—provides a distinctive backdrop that blends Victorian aesthetics with speculative fiction. The narrative's focus on moral ambiguity, where the player can arrest innocent people or declare cases unsolvable, adds depth to the detective genre. The game's development by Grundislav Games, after designer Francisco Gonzalez left Wadjet Eye Games, and its use of the Adventure Game Studio engine, reflect a continuation of the indie adventure tradition. The spiritual successor Rosewater, set in the same world but in an alternate American West, extends the universe. Lamplight City is noted for its atmospheric storytelling and the way it ties each case to the protagonist's personal tragedy, making the player's investigative choices feel consequential.
