Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

A Pict warrior battles psychosis and Norse gods to save her lover's soul.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, the first game in the Hellblade series, is an action-adventure title from 2017 that was both developed and published by Ninja Theory. It launched on PlayStation 4 and Windows in August of that year, later arriving on Xbox One in April 2018, Nintendo Switch in April 2019, Xbox Series X/S in August 2021, and PlayStation 5 in August 2025. A virtual reality mode was added through a 2018 update.

The story takes place in a dark fantasy realm shaped by Norse mythology and Celtic culture. Players control Senua, a Pict warrior who journeys to Helheim to free her deceased lover's soul from the goddess Hela. The game was made by a team of about twenty people, led by writer and director Tameem Antoniades, and was described by its creators as an "independent AAA game." It mixes puzzle-solving, psychological horror, and melee combat. Voice acting is central, and cutscenes combine motion capture from Melina Juergens with live-action performances from other actors.

Senua believes she is cursed with hearing voices, which is actually a manifestation of psychosis. The narrative uses her condition as a metaphor, and she is haunted by an entity called the "Darkness," voices known as the "Furies," and memories of her past. To ensure an accurate portrayal of psychosis, the developers consulted neuroscientists, mental health experts, and people who live with the condition.

Critics praised the game as a work of art, highlighting its unusual focus on psychosis, the quality and originality of its approach to the subject, and its story and protagonist. The presentation and Juergens's performance were considered exceptional for an independent game, though some criticism was directed at the gameplay and other elements. By June 2018, it had sold over one million copies. A sequel, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, came out on May 21, 2024.

**Gameplay**

The game has two main modes. In the first, Senua freely walks and interacts with her environment, focusing on story through voiceover or solving puzzles to progress. She uses a "focus" ability, reflecting how her condition makes her see things differently, to trigger puzzle events. Using focus on hidden totems triggers voiceover memories from her friend Druth about Norse stories; finding all forty-four unlocks a bonus cutscene before the climax that expands on Druth's backstory.

Lore & Background

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was released for PlayStation 4 and Windows in August 2017, with later ports to Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. A virtual reality update was added in 2018. The game was developed by a team of about twenty people under Tameem Antoniades. The story follows Senua, a Pict warrior from Orkney in the late 8th century, who believes she suffers from a curse that causes her to hear voices called 'Furies.' She carries the severed head of her dead lover Dillion and is guided by memories of Druth, a former slave of the Norsemen. Senua's backstory is revealed through hallucinations: her mother Galena, who also had the condition, was burned alive by Senua's father Zynbel, who abused Senua and isolated her. Senua left her father to be with Dillion, but after a plague, she exiled herself; returning, she found Dillion killed in a blood eagle ritual by Norsemen. She then set out to save his soul from Hela.

Reader's Guide

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice received positive reviews from critics, who praised it as a work of art and applauded its uncommon choice of revolving around psychosis, the quality and uniqueness of its approach to the condition, and its story and main character. Its overall presentation, along with Melina Juergens' performance, was considered superior in quality to what independent games usually provide, although its gameplay and other elements received some criticism. The game sold over one million units by June 2018. A sequel, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, was released on 21 May 2024. The game's significance lies in its blending of psychological horror with a respectful depiction of psychosis, developed in consultation with experts and those living with the condition. Its 'independent AAA' label highlighted a production model that aimed for high production values on a smaller team scale.
