Lore & Background
Dreamscape was developed over three months by George Lippert, who co-wrote the script and voiced all male characters. Carol Mertz and Lippert's son Zane voiced all other characters. The game was built around a 3D cabin model Lippert created while learning Unreal Engine. Originally scheduled for April 2011, the release was delayed two months to fix a memory bug that prevented it from running on certain devices. It became the second game to run on iOS using Unreal Engine 3, after 2010's Infinity Blade.
Gameplay involves virtual touchscreen controls with analog sticks for movement and camera control, plus swipe gestures. Players complete puzzles—mostly fetch quests and occasional quick time events—in a fixed order to unlock areas. A diary with a map and titled pages guides players through a thirty-acre open world, filling with backstory as the narrative progresses. Upon completion, a free roam mode is unlocked.
The story follows Wilson, a brain-dead patient with hours to live, who awakens in his Dreamscape—a representation of his hometown Bastion Falls and countryside. Guided by the Scarecrow Guide, he revisits memories of his childhood friend and fiancée Amelia, her overprotective father Lawrence, and his jealous friend Frank Dodd. Wilson eventually discovers that Frank drowned Amelia when she refused to call off the wedding. Wilson then enters Frank's chaotic Dreamscape to confront him.
Reader's Guide
Dreamscape received mixed or average reviews upon release, with critics praising its narrative and sound design while criticizing uninspiring gameplay and repetitive elements. Its significance lies in its experimental approach to the adventure genre, prioritizing story over traditional interactivity. The game's use of Unreal Engine 3 on iOS was notable as only the second title to do so. The development story—a small team led by George Lippert working from a personal 3D model—reflects the indie spirit of early 2010s mobile gaming. Despite its mixed reception, Dreamscape's focus on emotional storytelling and its unique premise of exploring memories in a liminal dream state contributed to its place as a curiosity in adventure game history.
