Lore & Background
The plot follows Shay Patrick Cormac, an Irish American privateer and Assassin who defects to the Templars after becoming disillusioned with the Assassins' tactics. The framing story is set in the 21st century, where the player, an Abstergo Industries employee, uncovers secrets while fixing the company's servers. The main plot is set before and during the French and Indian War from 1752 to 1760. Gameplay is similar to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, featuring ship-based naval exploration and third-person land-based exploration, with new features such as an air rifle, a grenade launcher attachment, and the ability to counter enemy attacks with timing similar to the Batman: Arkham series. The Morrigan, Shay's ship, has a shallower draft for river travel and can be equipped with Puckle guns, oil slicks, and an icebreaker. Enemy Assassins can hide in bushes, blend in with crowds, and perform air assassinations. The game introduces Assassin Interception side missions, where Shay prevents assassinations by eliminating hidden Assassins.
Reader's Guide
Assassin's Creed Rogue received a mixed reception upon release. Critics praised the game's twist on the traditional formula by playing as a Templar, its storyline, protagonist, and naval warfare gameplay. However, it was criticized for failing to innovate the series' formula, its short length, and similarities to Black Flag. The game is the last Assassin's Creed title developed for the seventh generation of consoles. A remastered version was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in March 2018, and it was included in The Rebel Collection for Nintendo Switch alongside Black Flag in December 2019. The game's significance lies in its unique narrative perspective and its role as a bridge between the earlier and later console generations of the series.
