Lore & Background

The game is set in the fantasy world of ZanZarah, which was created long ago by human Druids to shelter magical creatures fleeing a great magic purge in the human world. The two worlds were separated by a machine called the Guardian, but over time ZanZarah became more like a prison, with wild fairies attacking travelers and dark elves appearing on the roads. A prophecy foretold that a savior from the human world would restore balance.

The story follows Amy, a young girl from London who receives a magic teleportation rune from a goblin on her eighteenth birthday. Upon arriving in ZanZarah, she learns she is the prophesied savior destined to become the greatest fairy trainer and save both worlds. The Shadow Realm, a place of great evil, lies beneath ZanZarah, with entrances in a pixie-hunter's cellar, catacombs beneath Tiralin, and the southeastern swamps.

Gameplay is divided into exploration and battle phases. In exploration, Amy navigates the world, solves puzzles, gathers items, and interacts with NPCs. Battles occur when Amy is attacked or challenged to a fairy duel, taking place in a first-person shooter-style arena where the player controls a fairy with two offense-defense spell pairs. Teleportation runes allow fast travel between key locations, and one rune returns Amy to London.

Reader's Guide

ZanZarah: The Hidden Portal is notable for blending action-adventure exploration with first-person shooter combat in a fairy-training framework, a design that set it apart from other games of its era. Its detailed fantasy setting, with a backstory of a magical purge and a prophecy, provided a rich narrative context for the gameplay. The game received generally favorable reviews, with particular praise for its soundtrack composed by King Einstein and the title theme performed by Kariina Gretere.

An expansion was in development in 2002, tentatively called ZanZarah: The Lost Village by fans, which would have added a new village named Gramire and characters including King Ironir, but it was cancelled for marketing reasons. Versions for Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube were announced in 2003 but also cancelled. After THQ's dissolution, Daedalic Entertainment acquired the rights and re-released the game on Steam in 2015, allowing a new audience to experience this cult title. The game's legacy lies in its unique hybrid of genres and its dedicated fan community, which still discusses the cancelled expansion.
