Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis

A point-and-click adventure with a third playable character and fourth-wall breaks.

Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis

Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis, originally titled *Geheimakte 2: Puritas Cordis* in German, is a point-and-click graphic adventure game. It was created by Fusionsphere Systems and Animation Arts, with Deep Silver handling publication. The title first appeared at the 2007 Leipzig Games Convention. A follow-up, *Secret Files 3*, arrived in 2012. The gameplay sticks to the same point-and-click style seen in its predecessor, *Secret Files: Tunguska*. However, the story adds a third character you can control, joining the returning duo of Nina and Max. Like the first game, it sometimes breaks the fourth wall. For instance, when Nina is told to pick up a gun, she remarks that the lead designer has banned minigames. The story picks up after Nina Kalenkov solved the Tunguska incident. She and her lover Max Gruber have split up. Nina heads to Portugal on a cruise, while Max travels to Indonesia. Their separation doesn't last. Worldwide natural disasters are escalating, and Nina’s father, Vladimir Kalenkov, is called in to investigate their cause. Meanwhile, a vicar fleeing into his church is killed over documents that predict the apocalypse. Before dying, he passes them to Bishop Parrey, the new playable character, who must keep them safe. For months, the world has faced constant natural catastrophes. A UN General Assembly in New York is planned, where officials and scientists—including Nina’s geologist father—will decide on action. A televangelist named Pat Shelton leads the European doomsday cult "Puritas Cordis," preaching that only pure-hearted members will be saved. Vicar Matthew found an old coded parchment in his village church and sent it to Bishop Parrey. Soon after, two men in combat suits murder Matthew. Parrey deciphers that the parchment involves a man named Zandona, whose prophecies speak of the world’s end. Before Parrey is also killed, he leaves the parchment for Professor William Patterson, a medieval cipher expert. A week later, Nina, fresh from her breakup with Max, boards the cruise ship Calypso. A man bumps into her and dies in an accident moments later. In her cabin, Nina finds Patterson’s suitcase instead of her own. Searching for hers, she learns the dead man was Patterson. Strange events plague the ship, the weather worsens, and just as a massive wave is about to hit, a helicopter rescues a secret sect member who caused the trouble.

Lore & Background

Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis utilizes the same point-and-click adventure gameplay as its predecessor, Secret Files: Tunguska, but the plot developments lead to the inclusion of a third playable character in addition to Nina and Max from the first game. The game occasionally breaks the fourth wall, similar to its predecessor. For example, when Nina is asked to pick up a gun she says that minigames have been forbidden by the lead designer. After Nina Kalenkov resolves the Tunguska event in the events of the first game, she ends up splitting up with her lover Max Gruber. Nina embarks on a cruise to Portugal and Max travels to Indonesia, but their separation does not last long. There has been an escalation of natural disasters around the world, and Nina's father Vladimir Kalenkov has been called upon to find out what is causing them. A vicar, fleeing into his church, is killed over documents prophesying the apocalypse, but not before he manages to get the documents into the hands of Bishop Parrey, a third playable character who is tasked with keeping the documents out of the wrong hands. The plot involves a televangelist named Pat Shelton, head of the European sect 'Puritas Cordis', who preaches that only those with pure heart will be saved. Nina and Max become entangled in a global conspiracy involving ancient prophecies, a key that can stop the end of the world, and a plan to create a tsunami to kill millions. The game concludes with a lengthy and humorous ending cutscene narrating what happened afterwards to each character.

Reader's Guide

Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis received 'mixed or average' reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic. It is notable for expanding the playable cast of the Secret Files series to three characters, including Bishop Parrey, and for continuing the story of Nina and Max from the first game. The game's plot involves a doomsday cult, natural disasters, and a conspiracy to reshape the world, with occasional fourth-wall-breaking humor. A third and final installment of the Secret Files series, Secret Files 3, was released on Windows in 2012, then ported to modern smartphones and the Nintendo Switch in 2020. One year after the initial PC release of Secret Files 3, a spin-off game, Secret Files: Sam Peters, was released and eventually made available on the same platforms as 3. It is a shorter game based on the eponymous character who first appeared in Secret Files 2.
