Managerial career

Gomes and Bragança parted ways by mutual agreement on 25 April 2017, following three straight losses that damaged their push for promotion. After stints with Rio Ave's reserve and under-23 sides, he took over at Académico de Viseu F.C. in Portugal's second division on 28 February 2021, with the team sitting 16th. His first match as a professional manager ended in a 2-1 defeat at S.C. Covilhã. He guided the club to a 14th-place finish and signed a one-year contract extension in June 2021. The next season began well, with the Beira side in fifth after ten matches, but a stretch of just one point from a possible 18 led to his dismissal before the end of the year. On 4 March 2022, he became Académica de Coimbra's fourth manager that season, but could not stop them from finishing last and being relegated from the second tier. He was named head coach of Arema F.C. in Indonesia's Liga 1 on 4 January 2025, and left by mutual consent on 24 June.
