Playing career

Gouveia played youth football for five clubs, including two spells at Sport Clube Senhora da Hora. He debuted as a senior with Varzim in 1991–92 and spent subsequent years in the third division. From 1995 to 1998 he represented União da Madeira and Paços de Ferreira in the Segunda Liga. He then signed with Farense, making his Primeira Liga debut on 12 September 1998 in a 2–0 away loss to Porto. On the last day of the January 2000 transfer window, Belenenses loaned him to Montpellier in Ligue 1 alongside Rui Pataca. After returning to Portugal, he joined Boavista and made eight substitute appearances as the club won its only national championship. He moved to Nacional in summer 2002, where he had his most consistent period, totaling 92 competitive games and 12 goals over three top-flight seasons. He signed for Gil Vicente on a free transfer on 7 June 2005, but after only five matches in the first half of 2006–07 he moved to Vizela. On 23 June 2007 he signed a one-year deal with Aves, then played for amateur side Vila Meã before retiring in 2010 at age 37.

Coaching career

Immediately after retiring, Gouveia returned to Boavista to manage the junior side, and two months later replaced Rui Ferreira as head coach of the main squad. He worked with Académica de Coimbra from 2011 to 2013 under Pedro Emanuel, and was part of the squad that reached their first Taça de Portugal final since 1939, defeating Sporting CP on 19 May 2012. On 20 June 2013 he was named head coach of Salgueiros, but was fired three months later after poor results. He was appointed at Santa Clara on 2 December 2014 following the sacking of Cláudio Braga, winning his first match 2–0 against Leixões. After José Viterbo's resignation, Académica announced Gouveia's return in September 2015 as head coach; his first league match was a 1–0 loss at Rio Ave, and he collected only six wins by season's end as the club returned to the second tier after 14 years. On 3 June 2016 he became manager of Covilhã, leading them to eighth place before being dismissed on 14 September 2017 due to poor results. In June 2018 he was hired at Leixões after Francisco Chaló left for Algeria, but was dismissed on 23 December after a 1–2 home defeat to Cova da Piedade. He signed with Saudi First Division League's Al-Jabalain on 11 July 2019, then returned to Portugal with Vilafranquense two years later. On 5 July 2022 he returned to Saudi Arabia with Al-Hazem, achieving promotion in his first season but being fired in October 2023. He went back to the Saudi second tier in June 2024 as manager of Al Faisaly, leaving by mutual consent on 28 November. On 6 January 2025 he was appointed at Campeonato Brasileiro Série C club Brusque, and left by mutual agreement on 10 July after four winless matches.
