Playing career

Born in Santo Tirso, Machado began his senior career with local Tirsense in the Segunda Liga in 1985. Over the next decade, he played in the Primeira Liga for Braga, Vitória de Guimarães, Estrela da Amadora, Chaves, Varzim and Campomaiorense. With Vitória de Guimarães, he featured in four complete games in the 1992–93 UEFA Cup, helping eliminate Real Sociedad. He finished his career in the second division with Maia and Aves, spent a year in lower league football with Tirsense, and retired at nearly 37 with Dudelange in Luxembourg.

Coaching career

Quim Machado started coaching in 2004 with amateur side Oliveirense. Two years later, he moved to fourth-division Tirsense, where he secured promotion to the third tier in his first season and later added three more top-four finishes. In June 2010, he joined second-division Feirense, leading them to promotion in his debut season and ending the club's 23-year absence from the top flight. He was fired on 2 April 2012 after a poor run, and Feirense ended 15th, dropping back down. That July, he took over Hungary's Vasas but returned to Feirense just two months later. In October 2013, he signed with Chaves, also in the second division. On 16 June 2014, he became manager of Polish side Lechia Gdańsk, but left in September due to disappointing results. During the 2014–15 season, he guided Tondela to the second-tier title and their first-ever promotion to the top division. On 18 May 2016, after keeping Vitória de Setúbal up by a narrow margin, he resigned. On 24 September 2016, he was hired by second-division Santa Clara, but left after only two matches for family reasons, joining top-tier Belenenses on 6 October. He departed Belenenses on 17 April the following year, disagreeing with a contract that would reduce his control over transfers. Machado then moved abroad to Saudi Arabia's Al Batin, who sacked him in February 2018 with the team in 19th place. On 2 April 2018, he took over second-division Académica de Coimbra, winning four of seven games. He resumed on 27 September 2018 at last-placed Arouca, leaving after their relegation in May 2019. A year later, he returned to Portugal's second division with Vilafranquense, but was let go on 26 October 2020 with the side second from bottom after seven matches. On 6 June 2022, he went back to Saudi Arabia with First Division League's Al-Orobah, then rejoined Al Batin in September 2023. In June 2025, he was appointed manager of Jordanian Pro League club Al-Hussein; his contract was terminated six months later.
