Jeffrey Atkins
Queens-born Ja Rule: The Murder Inc. flagship artist who dominated early-2000s charts with Ashanti before navigating legal and industry controversies.
Jeffrey Atkins, known professionally as Ja Rule, is an American rapper, singer, and actor born on February 29, 1976, in Hollis, Queens. He gained prominence by blending gangsta rap with pop and R&B sensibilities under Irv Gotti's Murder Inc. Records. His debut album, Venni Vetti Vecci (1999), launched his career with the hit single "Holla Holla." Between 2000 and 2004, he released a string of commercially successful albums including Rule 3:36, Pain Is Love, The Last Temptation, Blood in My Eye, and R.U.L.E., all featuring chart-topping singles like "Always on Time" and "Put It on Me." Beyond music, Atkins acted in films such as 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) and Scary Movie 3 (2003), though his career later faced scrutiny due to his role as a performer and promoter for the fraudulent Fyre Festival.

Lore & Background
Ja Rule's career trajectory began in 1994 within the Cash Money Click, a group that disbanded after their TVT Records deal fell through following member Chris Black's imprisonment. Rebranding for his solo debut, he signed to Def Jam via Irv Gotti's Murder Inc imprint. His stylistic shift on Rule 3:36 (2000) from hardcore hip-hop to mainstream pop-rap earned him a number-one Billboard 200 debut with 276,000 first-week sales. This era defined his partnership with Ashanti; their collaboration "Always on Time" became the first song for both artists to top the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2001. The success continued with Pain Is Love (2001), which also debuted at number one and was certified triple platinum. By 2005, he had secured seventeen Hot 100 hits, though his later albums R.U.L.E. and Blood in My Eye saw declining commercial traction compared to his triple-platinum peak.
