Paw Patrol
Whenever you're in trouble, just yelp for help!
Paw Patrol (often written as PAW Patrol) is a Canadian animated TV series for children. Keith Chapman created the show, Spin Master Entertainment produces it, and Guru Studio handles the animation. In Canada, it airs on TVOntario as part of TVOKids, which first showed previews in August 2013. The series debuted on Nickelodeon's Nick Jr. in the United States on August 12, 2013. The story follows a ten-year-old boy named Ryder, who leads a team of rescue dogs known as the Paw Patrol. They protect the coastal town of Adventure Bay and its surroundings. Each dog has a specialty, like firefighting, police work, or aviation. The team lives in doghouses that can turn into customized vehicles called pupmobiles. They also wear high-tech backpacks, or pup packs, filled with tools for their jobs.

Plot
Every episode of Paw Patrol follows a consistent structure. It begins with the dogs enjoying their daily routines in Adventure Bay, such as playing with toys or visiting the playground. A ten-year-old boy named Ryder learns about a problem either by receiving a call for help or by witnessing it himself. His most common callers are the accident-prone marine biologist Cap'n Turbot and the town's mayor, Mayor Goodway.
Ryder alerts the team through their blinking pup tags, and they gather at their base, the Lookout, entering its elevator. Marshall usually arrives last, causing a funny accident that makes the other pups laugh as the elevator rises, though Rubble sometimes triggers this gag instead. Once at the top floor, the pups line up. Chase declares the team ready, and Ryder explains the situation.
He selects a few members, typically two first responders, to handle the problem. They slide down to their vehicles and carry out their mission. Their tasks include rescuing people, stopping various dangers, and, in later episodes, foiling the schemes of Mayor Humdinger from Foggy Bottom. After completing the mission, Ryder says his catchphrase, "Whenever you're in trouble, just yelp for help!" or a similar version, and congratulates the dogs.
Later episodes introduce themed sub-series. In "Air Pups," the team uses the Air Patroller and other flying gear for aerial rescues. "Mission: PAW" sees them acting as undercover spies in the kingdom of Barkingburg, where they help the princess and the earl while dealing with the princess's dog, Sweetie. "Sea Patrol" focuses on water-based missions, with the team facing pirate captain Sid Swashbuckle and his dog Arrby.
"Ultimate Rescue" involves high-stakes missions that require the entire team. "Mighty Pups" has the pups gaining superpowers from a meteor and becoming superheroes, battling enemies like Mayor Humdinger's nephew Harold, Ladybird, and Copycat. "Dino Rescue" takes the team to the Dino Wilds. "Moto Pups" has them working with a character named Wild and opposing a dog biker gang called the Ruff-Ruff Pack.
"Rescue Knights" transforms the team into knights, fighting Claw, a former knight with a dragon named Sparks, who is allied with the Duke of Flappington.

Reception
People have mixed opinions about Paw Patrol. Many say it appeals well to very young kids, but it has also faced serious criticism for its themes, how characters are shown, and what some see as hidden social or political messages. Common Sense Media’s Emily Ashby gave the show four stars, saying its best quality might be how it shows the value of careful problem-solving. Randy Miller from DVD Talk recommended it, calling it full of harmless action and silly jokes that make children laugh.
Stuff.co.nz’s Pattie Pegler liked the series but thought some characters felt random, like Rocky the Recycling Pup. The About Group’s Carey Bryson gave a mixed review, calling the show formulaic but admitting it has funny moments. A 2016 study for Sky found that 16 percent of British and Irish kids surveyed picked Paw Patrol as their favorite show. Early on, the show was criticized for having mostly male dogs and only one female character.
Brandy King from the Center on Media and Child Health said the gender imbalance was immediately obvious. In April 2015, Today’s Parent noted that Paw Patrol images were often shared on Twitter with the hashtag #IncludeTheGirls. In response, the writers added a female Siberian Husky named Everest in season 2. A 2018 University of Michigan study accused the mobile game Paw Patrol: Air and Sea Adventure of being manipulative toward young players, because characters from the show would act disappointed if users didn’t spend real money on items.
A 2020 paper in the journal Crime, Media, Culture argued that the show suggests companies are better at providing social services than the government. Author Liam Kennedy claimed it encourages support for a global capitalist system that creates inequality and environmental harm, and that it echoes neoliberal ideas by showing politicians as incompetent or unethical while the Paw Patrol corporation handles crime and conservation.
