Life and career
Jeremy Fisher, born Jeremy Binns, grew up with a mother from Newfoundland. He attended Westdale Secondary School, where he was a member of the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band, graduating in 1995. In 1999, he attended Camp Gesher and later worked as a camp counsellor at YMCA Wanakita. Early in his career, he performed with the band The Obvious under his birth name, and some of their songs, including "Lemon Meringue Pie" and "Kiss the Moon", later appeared on his solo albums.
The Obvious released a self-titled CD in 1999. To support his 2001 independent debut album Back Porch Spirituals, Fisher undertook a 7,500-kilometre bicycle tour from Seattle across Canada to Halifax, Nova Scotia, performing 30 shows over six months. The tour, called "One Less Tourbus", raised funds for the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy to promote bicycle access and girls' education in Africa. He has also worked as a sidewalk busker.
His first major-label album, Let It Shine, was released on October 12, 2004, through Sony BMG Music Canada, and its second single "High School" received wide airplay on Canadian radio and music television in early 2005. In February and March 2005, he toured Canada with Sarah Slean, and in April he performed at Expo 2005 in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. In 2006, he toured with Xavier Rudd and opened for Rex Goudie on the Outports Tour 2006. That same year, he duetted with the industrial supergroup Jakalope on the track "Unsaid" from their album Born 4.
His third album, Goodbye Blue Monday, co-produced with Hawksley Workman, was released on March 27, 2007, by Aquarius Records. The single "Cigarette" was added to radio after a surprise play at Toronto station 104.5 CHUM-FM in early 2007, and its homemade video garnered over two million views on YouTube. On August 20, 2007, Fisher made his U.S. television debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and the following night he appeared again with Craig Northey and Pat Steward of Odds.
The album was released in the United States on August 28, 2007, through Wind-up Records. In 2008, he opened for The Proclaimers on their North American tour, and in September 2009 he opened for several Great Big Sea shows in Ontario, later making a guest appearance on their 2010 album Safe Upon the Shore.
