History

The series Beached Az grew out of the 2008 short film Beached Whale, animated and directed by Jarod Green and co-written and co-directed by Anthony MacFarlane and Nick Boshier. After the short gained a large following in Australia and New Zealand via YouTube and social media, the trio formed The Handsomity Institute and created ten more episodes for ABC Television in 2009. The writing was done at Seal Rocks on the New South Wales coast, with final recording that June at ABC studios in Ultimo. The series first appeared online on 13 September 2009, a week before its ABC2 broadcast. Season 2 premiered on 3 June 2010, and a national DVD release followed on 4 November 2010.

Episodes

On 11 December 2018, Production House Robot Army Productions announced on YouTube a new home for Beached Az along with new episodes commissioned by the Government of Australia and Screen Australia, with a planned release date of March 2019. The humour remains comic and confrontational, with episodes set to address coral bleaching, reverse racism, the impact of plastic and fishing on the ocean environment, genetic diversity of fish in fish farms, global warming, sexism, drug cartels, and corporate deforestation.
