Characters
Kitty, voiced by Roslyn Oades, is the titular heroine who is not a cat. She has black hair, white skin with light maroon cheeks, and wears an orange cat costume with a red collar. She is an orphan, and her origin remains a mystery. King Tubby, voiced by Rove McManus, is a fat black tuxedo Persian cat who wears a red collar and a tin can as a crown.
Self-appointed king of all cats, he spends most of his time on his throne pretending to know what is going on, and he does not play any musical instrument. The Nazz, voiced by Stephen Hall, is a dark orange Norwegian forest Persian fox-cat, possibly the oldest cat in the mansion. He is the sanest, wisest, and most responsible cat, a talented piano player who has composed and recorded several albums. In season 2 he barely appears, with only two speaking roles and non-dialogue cameos; his father-figure role is taken over by Ming, and he is completely absent in season 3.
Petal, voiced by Cal Wilson, is a Russian Blue cat who is soft-spoken and calm, caring for others but firm when needed. She plays the saxophone and acts as a mother figure to Kitty. Timmy Tom, voiced by Rachel King, is a light blue tabby cat, the youngest of the cats, almost always with Kitty and able to play several instruments including pianos. Miley, also voiced by Rachel King, is a light pink tabby cat with glasses.
She is a brilliant, snarky, sour loner who reads books and cultivates her individuality, with a hidden soft spot for Kitty. She uses a keyboard and specializes in samples, synthwave, and electronic music.
Production
Kitty Is Not a Cat was created by Bruce Kane and Maurice Argiro and produced by BES Animation for Seven Network in Australia. Kane stated they wanted to create a show blending urban culture, comedy, and music for children aged 6 to 10. A pilot test animation was uploaded to BES Animation's YouTube channel on 28 April 2016, implying a darker tone that was ultimately dropped. The pilot included a character named Blossom, a snobby red female cat, who was removed from the final series, and Rose, a white female cat, was redesigned and reworked as Thorn's cousin for one episode.
Broadcast
The show first aired in Australia on 7TWO on April 20, 2018, with its first season ending on May 25, 2018. Season two began on November 11, 2019, but stopped mid-run after the November 29, 2019 episodes "Sibling Rivalry/Dog Whistling." The rest of that season sat unaired for years. In March 2026, episodes 16-21 appeared on the 7plus website on March 15, followed by episodes 22-26 on March 20, with a TV broadcast scheduled to start September 4, 2026.
The third and final season has not aired in Australia. Overseas, all three seasons aired in English on India's ETV Bal Bharat from its April 27, 2021 launch, with season three arriving in May 2023. In the United States, season two hit Kartoon Channel in November 2021, while season one was free on The Roku Channel around December 2019 but later removed. South Africa's Disney Channel premiered the show on April 23, 2018, and Showmax later hosted all three seasons, adding season three back in August 2024 after a removal.
New Zealand airs it on TVNZ 2. In the UK, Virgin Media's Virgin Kids section offered episodes on demand as of March 2021, listed by title without episode numbers.
