Development
The ReVisioned series, which reimagines popular video game universes with new character stories, began with Lara Croft. The concept was sparked by GameTap's "A Day in the Extra Life" project. Comic writers Warren Ellis, Brian Pulido, Peter Chung, Jim Lee, and Gail Simone each contributed episodes. Lee, a game fan, co-wrote the final episode, "A Complicated Woman."
Simone, drawn to Lara as a strong female lead similar to Wonder Woman, wrote "Pre-Teen Raider," exploring her life before becoming the Tomb Raider. Chung, new to the games, used the freedom to craft his own narrative; after researching, he noticed Lara usually retrieves a relic before a villain, so he flipped that dynamic in his first three episodes. Ellis compared Lara to adventurer Allan Quatermain. Pulido, who wrote "The Revenge of the Aztec Mummy" and "Lara Croft: Legacy," saw her as "a hot chick with guns" and drew inspiration from Tex Avery cartoons.
Though the writers had wide creative latitude, the developers provided basic character guidelines to keep Lara consistent. In December 2021, Simone tweeted that Warner Bros. had discussed adapting her episode into a series, but no project materialized by 2025.
