Production
The popularity of The Waltons led ABC to order an animated program set around the turn of the century. It was one of three serious Saturday morning shows the network aired in 1974, alongside the live-action Korg: 70,000 B.C. and the animated family drama Devlin. These Are the Days and Devlin were among the few dramatic series Hanna-Barbera ever produced, as the studio was best known for slapstick comedies and action-adventure cartoons. Warner Bros. later acquired Hanna-Barbera via Turner Entertainment, as well as Lorimar Productions, which produced The Waltons. Despite critical acclaim, the series was a ratings failure, as were Devlin and Korg: 70,000 B.C.; all three were cancelled by year's end. Twelve original episodes aired in fall 1974, and the show continued in reruns with four new episodes in September 1975.
