Pokémon: Twilight Wings is an original net animation series from Japan, created by Studio Colorido and distributed on YouTube by The Pokémon Company. While inspired by the Pokémon Sword and Shield video games, it is separate from the main television anime. Eight episodes were announced on December 12, 2019, with the first released on January 15, 2020. Episodes were scheduled monthly, but the fifth was pushed from May to June 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first seven episodes function as a prequel to Sword and Shield. The series initially ended with the seventh episode on August 6, 2020.
A special episode, "The Gathering of Stars," based on the downloadable content The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra, debuted in Japanese on November 5, 2020, and in English on November 17, 2020. Some Pokémon species absent from the Sword and Shield games, like Dewgong, appeared in the fourth episode, leading to fan complaints about feeling misled. The Pokémon Company later issued a public apology for this.
