The show debuted on May 25, 2016, on YouTube Red, a paid service of streaming original series and movies, similar to Netflix. On December 3, 2017, creator Benny Fine confirmed that the series would not return for a second season.

Premise

Stacey Needles, an underrated production assistant on the television music competition series Sing It!, sees an opportunity to become executive producer after the original executive producer is fired. Her plan is thwarted by the arrival of Drew, an inexperienced but creative indie production assistant who steals the attention of executives. The show features presenter Troy Blue and judges Holli Holiday, a self-promoting singer, and Barry, a rarely impressed artist manager. Ten contestants are selected at auditions, with one eliminated each week.

Cast and characters

Mircea Monroe plays Stacey Needles, a production assistant aspiring to be executive producer. Mark Jude Sullivan portrays Drew, the new production assistant who becomes a potential future executive producer. Debby Ryan appears as Holli Holiday, a famous and egocentric singer who judges and self-promotes. Preston Jones plays Troy Blue, the seductive and charismatic presenter.

Alex Désert is Barry, an artist manager and television producer rarely impressed by contestants. Missi Pyle plays Marcy. Laura Harrison is Kali, Stacey's assistant, and Zack Weinstein is Luke, Drew's assistant. Ace Young portrays contestant Darrell Docket, and Diana DeGarmo plays his wife, contestant Darcy Docket.

Other contestants include Leah Lewis as Sophie Chu, Diamond White as Maisy Kelly, J.D. Phillips as Freddy Traymont, Lily Mae Harrington as Adeline Murphy, Drew James as Zack Tribbet, Maxwell Glick as Shimon Rabinowitz, Shoniqua Shandai as Crystal Carl, and Sam Tsui as Magnus Erikson. Scott Rodgers plays a Technical Director.

Karl T. Wright and Janna Cardia portray Maisy's parents. Sasha Pieterse appears as Destiny Wood, Holli's old friend. Todrick Hall plays record producer Milo, and Yanic Truesdale is network president Beau Hemsworth.

Production

In late 2015, the Fine Brothers partnered with YouTube Red to create a comedy series parodying talent competitions like The X Factor, The Voice, and American Idol. Debby Ryan, Preston Jones, Alex Désert, and Todrick Hall joined the cast that November.

Production, in collaboration with Mandeville Films, started the following month. Ryan’s character, Holli Holiday, was modeled after Paula Abdul, while Désert’s character drew from Simon Cowell. A teaser debuted on April 13, 2016.
