Overview
WWF Superstars, a handheld wrestling game, was created by Rare and released by LJN. It first came out in Europe and North America in 1991, then in Japan on February 14, 1992. Before a match, wrestlers deliver promos aimed at their opponent, and after the bout, Vince McMahon provides commentary. Each of the five wrestlers—Hulk Hogan, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, The Ultimate Warrior, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, and Mr. Perfect—has two lines: a generic taunt and one directed at a specific foe. Nintendo Power gave the game a 2.9 out of 5 rating in its April 1991 issue.
Gameplay
In the game, every wrestler has the same basic moves, only their individual strike attacks are different. The full moveset includes punches, kicks, a bodyslam, and grappling moves like a piledriver, suplex, and headlock with punches that are only possible after lifting an opponent off the mat. Ground attacks are an elbow or knee drop, Irish whip moves are a clothesline and dropkick, and flying turnbuckle moves are also an elbow or knee drop. Players can fight outside the ring by tossing an opponent over the ropes or hitting a dropkick through them. Throwing someone out is limited to once per match and does heavy damage. After picking a wrestler, the player must beat the other four in a row to become WWF World Heavyweight Champion, which earns a portrait of their chosen superstar.
