Glacier National Park is a national park of the United States located in northwestern Montana, on the Canada–United States border. It encompasses more than 1 million acres and includes parts of two mountain ranges, more than 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals. The park is the centerpiece of the 'Crown of the Continent Ecosystem,' a protected region of 16,000 square miles. It is notable as part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the world's first International Peace Park, designated in 1932, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.

The region that became Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Native Americans, including the Blackfeet in the east and the Flathead in the west. Under pressure, the Blackfeet ceded the mountainous parts of their treaty lands in 1895 to the federal government, which became part of the park. The park was established on May 11, 1910, after efforts by George Bird Grinnell and the Boone and Crockett Club. Soon after, the Great Northern Railway constructed hotels and chalets, many now National Historic Landmarks. During the late Little Ice Age of the mid-nineteenth century, an estimated 150 glaciers larger than 25 acres still covered the landscape. By 2010, researchers counted only 25 active glaciers remaining. Scientists monitoring the ice have warned that, should current climate trajectories hold, every last active glacier in the park could vanish by 2030, erasing a geological signature that has shaped the region for millennia.

The Backbone of the World

Long before European contact, the Flathead (Salish), Kootenai, Shoshone, and Cheyenne peoples called this region home. The Blackfeet, who ranged across the eastern slopes and the Great Plains just beyond, found in the mountains a critical refuge from brutal winter winds, supplementing their bison hunts with additional game. To them, peaks like Chief Mountain and the Two Medicine area in the southeast were sacred, revered as the "Backbone of the World" and visited during vision quests. The 1855 Lame Bull Treaty initially drew the Blackfeet Reservation boundary up to the Continental Divide, encompassing the eastern portion of what would become the park. In 1895, Chief White Calf of the Blackfeet authorized the transfer of roughly 800,000 acres to the U.S. government for $1.5 million, on the condition that the tribe retained hunting rights so long as the ceded strip remained public land. That agreement fixed the boundary between the reservation and the park that persists to this day, while the Flathead Reservation sits to the west and south.

From Forest Preserve to National Park

The push to protect this landscape was driven largely by naturalist George Bird Grinnell, who first entered the region in 1885 on a hunting trip guided by James Willard Schultz. Struck by the scenery, Grinnell devoted the next two decades to lobbying for federal protection and, in 1901, coined the phrase "Crown of the Continent" to describe the area. The Great Northern Railway, which crossed the Continental Divide at Marias Pass in 1891, also played a pivotal role: the company advertised the region's splendors to attract passengers and lobbied Congress directly. In 1897 the area was set aside as a forest preserve, a designation that still permitted mining. On May 11, 1910, the park was finally established. The Great Northern then built a string of grand hotels and chalets, 350 of which now appear on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1932 the Going-to-the-Sun Road was completed, later honored as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark for giving motorists direct access to the park's heart.

A Living, Borderless Ecosystem

Spanning more than 1 million acres along the Canada–U.S. border, Glacier National Park shelters over 1,000 plant species and hundreds of animal species across ecosystems that range from prairie to alpine tundra. Large mammals including grizzly and black bears, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, mountain lions, mountain goats, gray wolves, wolverines, and Canadian lynx all still roam the landscape, joined by hundreds of bird species, more than a dozen fish, and thousands of butterflies and pollinating insects. The park's international significance is equally remarkable. Together with Canada's Waterton Lakes National Park, it forms the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the world's first, designated in 1932. The UN named both parks Biosphere Reserves in 1976 and World Heritage Sites in 1995. In April 2017 the joint area received a provisional Gold Tier Dark Sky Park designation, the first transboundary one. Forest fires remain a constant presence; a fire has burned in every year of the park's existence except 1964, with 1936 recording a record 64 separate fires and 2003 seeing six fires consume roughly 136,000 acres.
