A vast Alaskan park of tidewater glaciers, wilderness, and Tlingit heritage.
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve lies in Southeast Alaska, just west of Juneau. The area was first set aside as a national monument by President Calvin Coolidge on February 26, 1925, under the Antiquities Act. President Jimmy Carter expanded the monument in 1978, and on December 2, 1980, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act added 523,000 acres (817.2 square miles) to it, simultaneously creating both the national park and the adjacent preserve. The preserve itself covers 58,406 acres (91.3 square miles) northwest of the park, safeguarding the Alsek River’s fish and wildlife while permitting sport hunting. In 1979, Glacier Bay became part of a binational UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1986. Since 1994, the National Park Service has worked alongside Hoonah and Yakutat Tlingit Native American organizations to manage the area. Altogether, the park and preserve span 3,223,384 acres (5,037 square miles), with 2,770,000 acres (4,328 square miles) classified as wilderness.
Geologically, the bay’s western side features a 26,000-foot-thick sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, predominantly massive limestones and argillite. The oldest of these is the Late Silurian Willoughby limestone, while the youngest is the Middle Devonian Black Cap limestone. West of Tidal Inlet, an outcrop contains sandstone, graywacke, and limestone of unknown age. On the east side of Muir Inlet, sedimentary rocks of unknown age include tuff interbedded with limestone. The rocks on the 1,205-foot hill called “The Nunatak” have been metamorphosed. Early Cretaceous diorite stocks appear south of Tidal Inlet and on Sebree and Sturgress Islands, while quartz diorite outcrops on Lemesurier Island. A granitic stock is exposed in Dundas Bay, and mafic dikes up to 20 feet wide occur throughout the region. Glacial advances took place roughly 7,000, 5,000, and 500 years ago, with the most recent one reaching the bay’s entrance and leaving a large semicircular terminal moraine. Surface glacial deposits include gravels as outwash and moraines, extending up to 2,000 feet up mountain slopes. Lakes have formed where glaciers have dammed valley heads, and preglacial forests are preserved east of Goose Cove and on the east side of Muir Inlet.

Gold Fever in the Ice
Long before the park existed, prospectors flocked to the bay's shores chasing gold. The most extensive and best-documented placer deposits lie in the beach sands near Lituya Bay, where mining began in 1894 and employed as many as 200 men by 1896, though most production had wound down by 1917. The Reid Inlet gold area, nestled between Lamplugh and Reid Glaciers in a zone of granodiorite and quartz diorite, hosted six mines that extracted quartz-vein gold lodes. The Monarch Mines and the Incas Mine were discovered in 1924 by J. Ibach; the Monarch No. 1 and No. 2 veins were drift-mined through 200-foot and 150-foot adits respectively. The LeRoy Mine, the largest operation in the area, was found in 1938 by A.L. Parker, a founder and resident of Gustavus, together with his son L.F. Parker. They ran a two-stamp mill and an aerial tramway until production largely ceased by 1945. Beyond gold, the region also yielded molybdenite in quartz veins on The Nunatak alongside trace gold and silver, copper on Observation Mountain, and a silver deposit on the western side of Rendu Inlet.
A Roadless Realm on the Edge of Two Nations
Glacier Bay occupies the northernmost stretch of southeastern Alaska's coastline, wedged between the Gulf of Alaska and the Canadian border. At Mount Fairweather, the boundary comes within just 15 miles of the ocean, and the peak itself rises to 15,300 feet, the park's highest point. The Brady Icefield caps the Fairweather Range on a peninsula that reaches from the open sea into the bay, which itself stretches from Icy Strait northward to the Grand Pacific Glacier at the border. To the east, the Takhinsha Mountains and Chilkat Range form a landmass bounded by Lynn Canal, while the park's eastern edge follows a ridgeline shared with Tongass National Forest. No roads penetrate the park; visitors arrive by air or by sea, with the Alaska Marine Highway ferry linking Juneau and Gustavus through Hoonah twice a week. Despite this remoteness, the park averaged roughly 444,000 recreational visitors per year between 2012 and 2021, most arriving on cruise ships whose daily numbers are capped by regulation. White-water rafters can also traverse the Tatshenshini River from Dalton Post in the Yukon to Dry Bay, a six-day journey crossing Kluane National Park and Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park in British Columbia.
