Plot
Sgt. William "B.J." Blazkowicz is captured by Axis forces and must escape to thwart the Paranormal Division. His journey takes him through prison, towns, and Castle Wolfenstein. The tone is lighter than earlier entries, featuring mutant chickens, romance novels, and a giant named Gunther. Weapons include a flamethrower, rocket launcher, and Tesla device.
Gameplay
The game is a first-person turn-based RPG, with movement and combat occurring in discrete steps. Players turn at 90-degree angles and move space by space; each action by the player allows all other characters one action. The slow pace encourages thorough exploration of levels, which include underground passages, weapon labs, and a moving vehicle. Two mini-games are included: the card game War and Chicken Kicking, where points are earned by kicking a chicken into a score area.
Development
Development involved id Software, Firemint Software, and Electronic Arts over many months. The mobile version released in late 2008, and EA Mobile announced its availability on the App Store on August 14, 2009. The iOS version requires iPhone OS 2.2.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch. John Carmack noted the App Store version is dramatically better than other platforms due to high-resolution graphics and audio rendered with hardware OpenGL acceleration. The game was available for most JRE-capable phones and iDevices; the iOS version has improved sound and graphics and recycles sound and music from Return to Castle Wolfenstein, while graphics are new with an exaggerated comic book style similar to Orcs & Elves. It differs from Wolfenstein Classic, a fast-paced retro FPS, as a turn-based action RPG.
Reception
Wolfenstein RPG received generally favorable reviews, with a GameRankings score of 87.50% based on a dozen reviews. Critics praised its weapon variation, humour, slow turn-based pace, attention to detail, classic Wolfenstein style, and RPG elements, while noting a lack of animation design. Appspy rated it 5, citing well-working controls and user-friendliness. IGN gave 8.5/10, praising the cartoon art direction. Pocket Gamer scored it 8/10, highlighting its distinct pace and black humour.
