Oduya began his career with Hammarby IF as a junior. At age 19 he moved to North America to play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, splitting time between the Victoriaville Tigres and Moncton Wildcats. He returned to Sweden, playing for Hammarby in HockeyAllsvenskan before joining Djurgårdens IF in the Swedish Elitserien, where he was known as an aggressive defenceman and enforcer. He later moved to Frölunda HC, where he played a more offensive role, scoring eight goals and 11 assists in the 2005–06 season.

Oduya signed with the New Jersey Devils for the 2006–07 season. Initially expected to be a depth player, he earned a spot in the lineup after several defenders were injured and played in 76 games, regularly logging nearly 20 minutes of ice time. He was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers in February 2010 as part of a deal for Ilya Kovalchuk, and later skated for the team after it relocated to Winnipeg to become the Winnipeg Jets. In February 2012 he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks.

During the 2012–13 NHL lockout, Oduya traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, to play for the Flying Farangs in the 'Land of Smiles' tournament, helping the team win Bangkok's first title. He won his first Stanley Cup in 2013, assisting on the Cup-winning goal in Game 6. He won his second Stanley Cup in 2015, playing all 23 playoff games with five assists. After the 2015 Finals it was revealed he had suffered an elbow tear from a trip by Nikita Kucherov.
