Background
The core four are George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt, known as George, Abe, Tom and Teddy, wearing jersey numbers matching their place in the order of presidents. William Howard Taft ('Bill') joined in 2013 and was retired after 2016, while Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover each raced for a single season, in 2015 and 2016. Teddy famously lost 525 races in a row before his first win on October 3, 2012, the last day of the regular season and two days after the Nationals clinched their first playoff berth in Washington; he then won all three races during the Division Series against St. Louis.
