Oconee War

Conflict between European colonists and the Oconee Muscogee in Georgia.

Last updated

Fighting between European settlers and the Oconee Muscogee erupted in the 1780s and 1790s over land between Georgia’s Apalachee and North Oconee rivers. The conflict, which stalled the founding of the University of Georgia, began when settlers pushed into Oconee territory. Georgia claimed the land via treaties the Muscogee rejected, and the war ended the area’s tradition of coexistence.
