Spren

Lore & Background

In the broader context of the Cosmere, spren are manifestations of Investiture in the Cognitive Realm that have taken physical form. They serve as the bridge between the spiritual and physical for magic users like Surgebinders. While characters from Nalthis like Vasher understand this energy, it behaves differently than the Breath they wield; furthermore, spren do not naturally manifest on other worlds such as Scadrial or Sel unless specific conditions allow their travel.

Reader's Guide

Spren function as magical allies for those who can bond with them through oaths or specific actions. They provide access to Stormlight and Surges, granting abilities like flight or healing. Unlike the Breath users of Nalthis who consume Investiture directly, spren users draw upon a shared pool of energy that flows from the storm itself. This makes their magic more volatile but potentially more powerful in combat. No native Nalthisi wields them naturally; they are specific to Rosharan biology and environment. However, understanding their nature helps explain the universal laws of Investiture seen across all worlds.
