Awakening Commands

Words that bend reality, fueled by the very breath of life itself.

Awakening Commands are the fundamental verbal triggers that allow a user to manipulate matter through the power of BioChromatic Breath in the world of Nalthis. Unlike the more intuitive Surgebinding of Roshar, Awakening requires precise speech; without speaking the correct command, even a god-like amount of Investiture cannot be directed effectively. These commands act as the bridge between human will and the physical laws of the universe, enabling feats ranging from simple object levitation to complex biological regeneration.

Lore & Background

The power of these commands is directly tied to the number of Breaths invested. A single Breath allows for a minor command with limited scope, while a godlike figure wielding hundreds or thousands can issue complex, multi-step commands that alter entire landscapes or heal fatal wounds. However, the cost is steep: every action drains the user's spiritual essence. If a user attempts to perform an Awakening greater than their available Breath count, the spell fails, often with catastrophic consequences for the caster, as the unspent Investiture has nowhere to go but back into them.

Reader's Guide

Awakening functions by converting BioChromatic Breath into physical work through spoken commands. The source is the user's own spiritual Breath, which acts as fuel. Each command has a specific cost; simple tasks like lighting a fire might require only one Breath, while complex biological restructuring or moving heavy objects requires many. The primary limitation is the Law of Conservation.

You cannot create matter from nothing; you can only rearrange existing matter. To heal a wound, you must provide the material to fill the gap, often drawing it from your own body or the surrounding environment. This makes healing dangerous if not carefully managed. Practical applications range widely: 'Burn' consumes fuel to create heat and light; 'Rise' manipulates gravity for levitation; 'Mend' repairs broken objects by fusing them back together.

Advanced users can chain commands, such as making a sword burn hot enough to cut through steel, but each step drains more Breath.
