Viewtiful Joe Codexery

Joe (Viewtiful Joe)

The film fan who became a real superhero.

Joe is the titular protagonist of the Viewtiful Joe series, a film-obsessed video store clerk and aspiring superhero who gets literally sucked into the silver screen. After his girlfriend Silvia is kidnapped by the megalomaniacal director Captain Blue, Joe transforms into the red-and-silver hero Viewtiful Joe, using his VFX powers to slow down time, speed up his punches, and zoom in for the kill in a side-scrolling beat-'em-up that feels like a living cartoon.

Lore & Background

Joe is a die-hard tokusatsu and action movie fanatic—he can quote entire scenes from old Kamen Rider episodes and practices hero poses in front of his TV. His life flips from mundane to cinematic when Silvia is snatched by Captain Blue, dragging Joe into the 'Movie World,' a dimension where every genre—from black-and-white noir to cheesy sci-fi—becomes a battleground. There, Joe unlocks VFX powers: Slow (slows time to weave through bullets), Mach Speed (blitzes enemies in a blur), and Zoom (pummels foes with a camera-close-up punch). Each power is a direct nod to filmmaking techniques, letting Joe literally edit reality to win.

Reader's Guide

Viewtiful Joe was developed by Capcom's Clover Studio, a team of ex-Capcom veterans led by Hideki Kamiya, who later directed Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. Released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003 (with a PlayStation 2 port in 2004), it earned raves for its cel-shaded art that looked like a playable Saturday morning cartoon, its VFX mechanics that let players manipulate time and space mid-combo, and its loving spoofs of tokusatsu and film history. The game spawned a sequel, Viewtiful Joe 2, a Nintendo DS spin-off Double Trouble!, and a cameo in the crossover fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars. Despite diminishing sales for later entries, Joe remains a cult-favorite Capcom icon, beloved for his over-the-top style and 'Henshin-a-go-go, baby!' swagger.
