Peripeteia
A cybernetic amnesiac seeks a secret bunker in post-Soviet Poland.
Peripeteia is an immersive sim from the Polish independent studio Ninth Exodus, currently available in Steam Early Access since 21 February 2025. Players take on the role of Marie, a superhuman cyborg suffering from amnesia, as she navigates a post-Soviet cyberpunk Poland in search of a hidden bunker.
The game offers multiple ways to complete its levels, a hallmark of the immersive sim genre. Non-player characters provide missions in exchange for items or information, all of which push the player closer to the main objective: reaching a secret bunker outside the city. Key gameplay mechanics include a free-form grid inventory system where items can be placed in various orientations, cybernetic implants activated via function keys, semi-realistic firearm reloading that requires manually replenishing empty weapons from the inventory, a timed hacking minigame that uses a heat-map keyboard display for password guessing, climbing and physics systems, and light-and-sound-based stealth.
The story is set after a third world war in the mid-to-late 20th century, sparked by an escalated Cold War and ending in a nuclear holocaust that devastated the planet. Most major population centers were hit, but large parts of Poland—including Warsaw—remained relatively untouched. The collapse of NATO and the Soviet Union created a power vacuum in Europe, filled by the newly formed Polish Solidarity Republic (PSR), which rose from the remnants of the Polish People’s Republic and the Polish Catholic Church. After the war, a vast region of Eastern Europe called the International Disputed Zone (IDZ) was claimed by three surviving powers: the PSR to the north, NATO to the west, and the Second Union (an attempted Soviet revival) to the east. The PSR occupied large parts of the IDZ, but its control is shaky, threatened by Second Unionist separatists and followers of a counter-culture movement known as the Joy Cult.
Cybernetic implants, originally developed as prosthetics for soldiers, became widespread as armies shifted toward bio-computer warfare. Marie, a cybernetic super-soldier, wakes up in a trash heap just as a black-market scrapper is about to dismantle her for parts. She has no memory of her identity or how she got there, but quickly learns to use her implants—including a spy drone, enhanced movement, and night vision.

Lore & Background
In the mid-late 20th century, the Cold War escalated into a third world war ending in a nuclear holocaust that devastated the planet. Most major population centers were hit, but a large portion of Poland, including Warsaw, remained relatively untouched. The power vacuum left by the destruction of NATO and the Soviet Union was filled by the newly formed Polish Solidarity Republic (PSR), which rose from the ashes of the Polish People's Republic and the Polish Catholic Church. A large expanse of Eastern Europe, called the International Disputed Zone (IDZ), was claimed by the PSR to the north, NATO to the west, and the Second Union (an attempted rebirth of the Soviet Union) to the east. The PSR occupied large regions of the IDZ, but true control is doubted due to threats from Second Unionist separatists and followers of a counter-culture movement called the Joy Cult.
Cybernetic implants, originally developed as prosthetics for soldiers, became popular as armies shifted toward cybernetic bio-computer warfare. Marie, a cybernetic super-soldier, wakes up in a trash heap moments before being dismantled for parts by a black-market scrapper. She has no memory of her identity or how she got there, but she quickly masters her implants, which include a spy drone, enhanced movement, and night vision. The plot follows Marie as she navigates the world toward the only other memory she has: an elusive Soviet bunker filled with strange, futuristic technology.
Peripeteia began as a game jam project in November 2019. The founders of Ninth Exodus reached out to other developers to refine it. The 'Unveiled' demo was released on 29 November 2020, containing a polished first level and new characters. A Kickstarter fundraiser launched on 14 August 2021 with an initial goal; the goal was reached three days later, and over the next month more than the goal was pledged, reaching all ten stretch goals. A revised demo was released on Steam on 18 August 2021. The game entered Early Access on 21 February 2025 with 8 levels.
Reader's Guide
Peripeteia is notable as an immersive sim that draws comparisons to Stalker, Deus Ex, and Thief, according to critics. PC Gamer's Joshua Wolens described it as feeling like a 'beautiful mutant hybrid of Stalker and Deus Ex,' while PCGamesN's Oisin Kuhnke noted similarities to the original Thief in its themes of authoritarian government and levels built around verticality. Eurogamer's Lewis Gordan praised the game's ability to conjure powerful moments of dread and awe as players navigate a crumbling megacity, though he criticized bugs and poor enemy AI. RPGFan's Ben Love elaborated on the AI issues in February 2025, noting that enemies can become invulnerable, fall through floors, or exhibit errors that break immersion and ruin stealth attempts. Love warned that potential players may feel the game requires more polish and may want to wait for a closer-to-full release. The game's development involved contributions from the indie community, such as the dialogue font White Rabbit by Matthew Welch, which was given a Slavic language overhaul by community members to properly display Polish and Cyrillic characters. Peripeteia's significance lies in its attempt to revive the immersive sim genre with a distinct post-Soviet cyberpunk setting, though its early-access state has drawn attention to technical shortcomings.
